Bob Briggs was hired in September 1986 and retired in May 2001 after 25 years of dedicated and accomplished service. He was a drafting technology instructor for his first 12 years and then Division Dean for 13 years. Upon his retirement, he was granted Emeritus status.
When Bob was hired in 1986 he had been working in the area of design drafting technology at the Lawrence Livermore Lab and was teaching for Fremont Unified School District in the summers. He brought that industry and teaching experiences to the college to develop and implement the Design Drafting Technology and Engineering Technology Programs.
Bob was an outstanding instructor in these program areas for 12 years before being appointed as a Division Dean. In this administrative position, he provided leadership and direction in a variety of program areas over the years including Electronics Technology, Engineering, Aviation Technology, Horticulture, Physics, Astronomy, Physical Sciences, Administration of Justice, and Physical Education.
As Dean, Bob led the planning for and use of college’s Vocational Education Act funding to support the occupational programs. He provided leadership in the integration of computer technology into the Design Drafting Technology and Electronics Programs. He assisted in the development of 2 + 2 articulation agreements in the technology areas with the Mission Valley Regional Occupational Program through the Ohlone Career Prep program.
Bob demonstrated a strong commitment to teaching and learning. He was a consistent supporter of faculty and students, especially in the occupational program areas. His leadership and advocacy for occupational education at the college extended into the community, including businesses and industries in the region.
