Eddie West began at Ohlone in September 2006 as the first Director of the new International Programs and Services Office. He immediately began the process of creating a International Students Program that could serve the international students enrolling at Ohlone. This entailed hiring staff to serve the students as well as creating a plan for increasing the number of international students. In addition, under his supervision, the English Language Institute was organized—this program served students who were learners of English and assisted them in becoming proficient enough in English to matriculate into the college programs. He later served as interim Dean of Counseling and eventually became Dean of Counseling and International Programs. He served Ohlone until March of 2013.
In addition to his other responsibilities, Eddie chaired the International Education Committee that set the goals for both the International Student Program and the Study Abroad program. He encouraged the participation of faculty and staff in welcoming international students and in providing opportunities for Ohlone students to study abroad. He was instrumental in obtaining a Business Grant for Study Abroad that allowed students to travel to Egypt, two summer trips to China and a trip to Vietnam and Cambodia where students had the opportunity to visit businesses. In the spring of 2010, the College also hosted a semester-long contingent of students from Egypt under State Department auspices.
Eddie was a tireless promoter of both International Students and Study Abroad. He was enthusiastic about all ideas for Study Abroad and he helped instructors and students realize their dreams with concrete plans and advice. His friendly, “can-do” attitude was welcomed by the college community and helped the faculty realize the importance of study in other countries as a way of helping students become citizens of the world.
